The Environmental Safety and
Compliance Assessment
INTRODUCTION
Today more than ever, a facilitys viability is tied to its ability to comply effectively and efficiently with current environmental regulations. Often a plants good compliance performance can be eliminated with a single mishap or regulatory omission. Having a facility environmental compliance assessment performed can be an important step towards achieving high-level compliance. This type of assessment can identify compliance areas that need strengthening. During the assessment, we can also provide suggestions with which to make efficient facility improvements. For corporations that consist of many locations, an assessment can be done at multiple facilities to assure that each location is measured against a common compliance standard. A compliance assessment can also provide a baseline for future improvement determinations. The result is better, more standard environmental compliance and compliance methods that can be imported from one location to the next, as needed.
SHARED STANDARDS
An environmental compliance assessment can be the first step in creating a bank of compliance information and procedures. Generating and sharing this important information with several inter-company facilities can create substantial company-wide efficiencies. It can also increase compliance uniformity between facilities. An example is the OSHA Lockout-Tagout Standard (LOTO). LOTO provides the framework to de-energize equipment for maintenance and for other purposes. A LOTO procedure must be created and used to lock and tagout each specific piece of equipment to be de-energized. The nature of specific machinery may prevent each LOTO procedure from being easily duplicated and used in other plants. However, the general standard can be duplicated and used to start the LOTO process at other company locations.
By sharing basic compliance knowledge and using standard procedures where appropriate, key personnel become better able to efficiently take the proper environmental and safety compliance steps. This will result in more resources available to allocate to your primary mission.
